New Garmin compact Cycling Computers

We love our Garmins and today they have released the Edge 20 and Edge 25, new compact cycling computers. Capture time, distance, speed, max speed, ascent and descent as well as location of ride and then share on social media with your mates.

These will set you back $169 and $229 respectively and they are both among the smallest on the market so in this case size appears to matter and inversely to what you might think. They can connect to your phone, thus the sharing in case your mates didnt know you were up at 5:30am cycling and you wanted them all to know how awesome you actually are or you can uipdate the Connect App and keep a record of what you've done like the rest of us on the road to perpetual improvement. You can also connect with a heart rate monitor, speed sensor and cadence sensor amongst other sensors which is great if you have these.

The new screens look awesome, whether you are on the mountain or road, a really quick glance is all you want to do. They are also water resistant, have around 8 hours battery as reported and weigh in at 25 grams. So if you have a carbion fibre bike and are in share this is important. If you are like me and need to lose a few kilograms and have a shitty bikje, probably not such a big deal.

Live tracking is also available via Connector for all those paranoid wives, and if you are not actually going cycling but need the excuse to do other things you might not want to mention this feature, ever or turn it on.Ofcourse you can download courses and race other riders but then you probably already do this on Strava.

So only question we had is whether this would stand up to mountain biking or if you would be looking at at least a $169 loss on the first trip out.

Looks like a great piece of equipemnt, a great new toy you might want but not need if you already have one. This is not a paid post but I am still keen to get my fingers on one of these. Curently use a Fenix 2 strapped onto the bars but many rabbits have nearly died while trying to read this tine screen in the twilight.

If you are wondering about why a 20 and a 25. The main differences per the Garmin site are tha thte Edge 25 can also do the following:

  • Smart notifications (Great for checking texts while riding. Is this even safe?)
  • Connect to a Bike speed and/ or cadence sensor
  • Auto sync. This is great we must add. Has Bluetooth
  • More accurate and easier sattelite predictions

So if you are expecting texts from your stockbroker in New York at 5:45am the Edge 25 is for you. Just kidding the satelite prediction and the auto upload is great based on experience with other Garmin products. $60 for easier effort and theoretically waiting around to get a GPS fix.
