Internet Sportwear - Wearable Tech

The Internet of Sportswear

So you already have 3 wireless networks around you when you run. Heart rate monitor, wireless headphones, GPS watch and so on. Need more?

Apparently you do and Athos a new start up is the company thats doing it! Not only that its coming to Australia and being distributed exclusively buy a gym equipment provider Temple Fitness. Makes sense! So what is it.

A range of "technology sportswear" with embedded sensors using electromyography to measure muscle activity, heart rate and breathing rate and transmit to smartphone app, with data being provided in real time. Sound good? You basically get real time feedback on how your body is handling the workout. I thinking your average middle aged over weight middle manager running 3km might not be the target market but your hard core athlete competiting might be able to use this data to achieve more and also train their whole body correctly. Obvious uses like running, cycling and working out in the gym come to mind but what about things like Pilates and Yoga?

Some questions we had:
  • Is it washable and how often
  • What about my fave Lulu lemon tops? Are they out
  • Many wear singlets when working out to show the world their arms? How is that going to go?

About Athos

Athos makes the gear and they are focussing on the gap left by your average Garmin or Polar. Getting feedback and data on the stuff you cant see. Only apparel that can actually measure muscle output otr so Athos is claiming. Athos have received over $15m in funding so they are pretty serious and has the support of numerous US sports stars.

So, lets just hope no one hacks in and sends you 340,000 volts while you are training. Just kidding. You can find out more about the device here, the future of fitness. We look forward to reading more reviews on this.
