Fenix 2 vs. Fenix 3

I have been using the Garmin Fenix 2 for a year and had the Fenix 3 for around 1,5 months, using them daily from group training and running through to swimming and then into the office. There are a lot of in depth reviews on the Fenix 2  and the Fenix 3 from DC Rainmaker here which are excellent and I cannot match from a depth perspective. Would I recommend you buy a Fenix 3, and would I recommend you upgrade from the Fenix 2 to the Fenix 3?

The answer is if you can afford it, absolutely!

Why upgrade?

  • The screen, the screen and the screen. So much easier to read during exercise and just out and about
  • Step tracker, keeps tabs when you are not exercising as well
  • Widgets, nice little data field options as well as functionality available through the Connect App
  • Wifi, it uploads when you walk into the house. This is a big deal for me
  • Bluetooth, can stay connected permanently and doenst effect battery as badly. On the Fenix 2 with Bluetooth on I would be lucky if a got a day compared to usuallya round 2 weeks
  • It just looks cool and more socially acceptable in an office environment

There are some little things missing in the software from the 2 to the 3, but every upgrade seems to bring more in or its is available as an App. These are not a big deal.

I use my Fenix 2 still for swimming, especially in the sea, training when on the sand or in mud and also on my road bike, I feel but this is not scientifically proven that the Fenix 2 is more durable. The 3 is for running and the rest of the day. Both still connect to the Connect app, the Fenix 2 just via Bluetooth only.

The only thing that might improve the Fenix 3 is a touch screen and the ability to read heart rate through your wrist as opposed to a chest strap. Other than that its perfect and Im loving it. Go out and buy one today. Great watch Garmin.
